Santa Maria del Fiore

Florence Duomo: what you actually visit

Florence Cathedral is not one doorway. The church nave is free; the rest of the piazza complex is not. This hub links the dome, bell tower, baptistery, museum and crypt so you stop buying the wrong ticket.

Arnolfo di Cambio laid the first stone on 8 September 1296. The works stalled, restarted under Francesco Talenti, then sat without a dome until Filippo Brunelleschi. The plan is a three-aisled basilica with an octagonal tribune already sized for a vault nobody in the 1300s yet knew how to close.

Inside, the stone reads quieter than the façade. Fix on a few objects: Paolo Uccello’s liturgical clock on the inner façade; the tribunes; Vasari and Zuccari’s Last Judgement in the dome — unreadable from the floor unless you crane for minutes. To see it close, you climb 463 steps.

Ticket comparison for “florence cathedral” searches

People typing florence duomo want three different products: a piazza photo (free), the interior (free with a queue), or a climb (paid, timed). Do not mash them into one impulse buy.

  • Nave only: no ticket, worship dress code, queue at the façade.
  • Nave plus original sculpture: Ghiberti Pass and the museum, where the original doors sit.
  • Skyline: Giotto Pass (you look at the dome) or Brunelleschi Pass (you stand on it).

Timing is everything

The nave shuts early, 15:45. Arrive at 15:10 in August and you may be turned away. Sunday is for worship, not sightseeing. Sunday dome slots start at 12:45.

The insider entry

Tourist nave door: façade, scanners. Reduced-mobility: Porta dei Canonici, south. Dome: north, Mandorla. Wrong queue means a missed slot and no refund from Opera.

How to save

If the goal is “see the Duomo”, the nave is enough. Pay only for climbs or the museum. Partner tours from €7 are guided cathedral visits, not dome access — read what’s included.

How to get there
