Brunelleschi wins the 1418 competition, closes the vault without a traditional wooden centering, consecration 1436. Lantern and Verrocchio’s ball come later. Brunelleschi’s dome tickets today are a slot, not a souvenir.
The route: tribune stairs, gallery on the fresco (Vasari from 1572, Zuccari to 1579), then the squeeze between shells, then the outer terrace. One way. You do not go back “for another photo”.
